I was born white, female and american. No one asked me beforehand whether i wanted to tick those boxes - they are boxes. The color of my kin is an arbitrary accident, not a personal brand. For me, the boxes into which i was born have been finements i've struggled to get out of. And i would wish that liberation for everyone else. Identity politics urges us all instead to cling to the bars of our cages in locating advantage and disadvantage too. Ironically, the last thing the identity politics crowd wants to see is a truly equitable society. Absent bigotry, its activists would be lost.
Is identity politics tearing society apart or is it a call for social justice for everyone? That's the theme of this week's Sunday Debate.
For the motion were journalist and author of 'We Need To Talk About Kevin', Lionel Shriver and Founding chair of the Equality and Human Rights Commission Trevor Phillips.
Against the motion were Labour politician David Lammy and Guardian journalist, the late Dawn Foster.
The chair was Kamal Ahmed former editorial director of the BBC.
