In 1861, the Civil War started. James Garfield fought several battles in the war. He needed female companionship and found it in a cross-dressing union spy named Pauline Kushman. When she was later freed by Union soldiers, she was very sick. She called him one of her most constant companions. Months later, James Garfield was called home.
