The Effects of Living in Space

In March, US astronaut Scott Kelly and Russian cosmonaut Mikhail Konienko began a year-long mission to investigate the long-term effects of living in space. Without gravity, astronauts can expect their bones and muscles to severely weaken and bodily fluids to pull in their heads so they feel like they have got a permanent head cold. Doctors hope to develop better ways of countering these effects - essential if humans are ever to make it to Mars and still have the strength to walk. Many of these experiments involve studying the astronauts themselves.
