You see the gateiit is all that this being cares about. It's all that any of these bleached coral beings cares about. They are driven solely by instinct to produce this, this passage leading to another world. In their minds at least, it is divine. And you feel this sense of betrayal and sadness and anger,. But more than anything, you feel his desperation and hope that you might be able to do something to help.
