In the years following the campaign, harold appears to have been trying to draw mercia closer to his sphere of influence. And if mercia was short on allies, for example, if gwynneth was no longer close to them, well that task would no doubt be easier. But despite harold's best efforts, all he managed to do with mercia is move it towards political neutrality. When it came to the house of godwin, the records suggests that the sons of elfgar neither opposed nor ported harold's rise in the english halls of power. They may not have been able to directly oppose harold's ambitions, but they weren't about to help him either.
