In his PhD thesis, gerard noticed that the great novels didn't seem to desire spontaneously ever. There was always a model that effecting their desire. And you can kind of trace their desire through these novels based on who their models of desire are. None of the literary critics had ever noticed this before. They were kind of like, too deep in the weeds and all these esoteric kind of readings of these books.
