The Light of Consciousness
The psyche is like a two-story building with one of the buildings underground. The lower floor is the floor of the unconscious and in Freud's view the unconscious is separated from the consciousness by a very solid flooring. You cannot remember back into that domain of the unconscious. If I ask you what you were doing August 11th three years ago you might not be able to remember right away. But if you have diary notes or a date card that remains from that period you could perhaps reconstruct it and even remember it in detail. This is a past event and a context of past events that is available to consciousness. It's down there that the dynamo is that supplies the energy for your life
