The Benefits of a Small Ant Colony

Leafcutter ants are true farmers they collect leaves from outside the nest chop them into pieces and bring them back underground to feed fungi. The colony has many different specialist casts of ants and they vary in size over two orders of magnitude which means the biggest ones are a hundred times bigger than the smallest. They can actually bite harder than you would expect just from their size difference, says David Lebont who runs this colony at Imperial College London.
