The last several decades of creeping authoritarianism in our own society have been driven in large part by the fact that American leaders have supported dictators and strongmen across places like Latin America. The plight of those refugees and their decision to flee the safety of the US has invigorated a right wing movement that has grown stronger and more dangerous over the decades. What makes fascism dangerous is its molecular or micro-political power, for it is a mass movement, a cancerous body, rather than a totalitarian organism.
