The 1955 Le Mans disaster has been called the accident that changed everything. Several countries in Europe, including France, Germany, Spain, and Switzerland ban motor sports until safety improvements can be made. The race course is redesigned to host newer cars which means drivers retire as a direct result of this event. Including American driver John Fitch, who leaves his team but never loses his life.
