The Origins of Self Help
The first self-help book was published in 1859. In the 60s and 70s, which we often think of as like a peak cult era in the US, that's when the self-help industry started taking on Eastern occultic vibes. A good half of our episodes are kind of self-healthy, like Instagram therapy, minimalism. But I also want to say there also is this kind of non-earnest but no less culted anti-following guru with his book The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F***. It reminds me of the IDGAF self-helper who's like the messy mom-fluencing - you're still influencing people
