Britain does not dream of some cosy isolated existence on the fringes of the European community. Our destiny is in Europe as part of the community, writes Lord Poll. It didn't go down very well with a lot of European governments - but she was right to deliver it. And above all, it never was seen at the time or subsequently as a rationale for leaving the European Union.
