Socrates argues that love doesn't make a man provide benefits for his beloved. Instead it gives him reason to harm the young object of his desires, he says. A non lover will be motivated not by physical lust but by good will and friendship,. So the boy should give his body, not to the besotted lover, but to an older man who is merely a friend.
