What Is So Interesting About the Elephantini Documents?

The documents were found at an archaeology site in Samaria, Israel. They show Jewish people worshiping in their own temple and taking oaths to gods other than the biblical God. This is a sort of complication in our map of early Judaism that we would not otherwise have inferred. It shows us that we have more work to do on filling out a total picture of early Judaism.
