William Walker was a supporter of slavery in his early life. He may have had a change of heart or recognized the usefulness of pro-slavery sentiment and gaining support for his filibustering. The most ardent advocates of manifest destiny were southerners who viewed expansion and annexation as opportunities to establish new slave states tipping the tenuous balance with abolitionists north.
