Oral and Advanced Literacy - The Heart of Problematic Literacy

Oral and literate performance can't be graded on the same scale because there are fundamentally different kinds. Face to face talk is often governed by the demands of social solidarity. Advanced literacy, on the other hand, contains an element of alienation and reaching beyond the given. This is the type of literacy that myron tuman calls problematic. It has this kind of dialectic sense of individuals always in some sort of straining relationship with the group with which they normally associate. There is a kind of pushing effect, alienating effect in problematic literacy that pushes the individual away from the group constantly.
