The Accident on the Greek Railway Line
There have been programs of modernization since the early 2000s, a whole sequence of them. The story of these programs appears even before the austerity shock began in earnest with a Greek debt crisis in 2010. Part of the privatization and austerity process since 2010 had been an absolutely massive reduction in personnel on the Greek railway system. This was no secret to anyone involved closely with the system that this had become an increasingly dangerous network.
