The Life and Times of Solon
Solon defended his work in poetry, very few fragments of which survive. He identified wealth as an unstable and problematic force in human affairs. His laws also made clear that while the regulation of women's behavior was essential to a well-ordered society, their role was limited to the private sphere. While he is the first, fully fleshed out historical character we may have seen, there are still so many things that remain uncertain.
