Many Catholics became Americans in the civil war. That is the great immigration of Catholics, 1820s, 1830s, and then the 40s and 50s. The Catholic church did have a unique position that sort of confounded Protestant America. So I don't want to exaggerate the- Well, you had Catholics on both sides of the war.
