Is There a Voiceless Consequence in Japanese?
Vowels get devoiced and then lost. That happens a lot in Japanese. So it wouldn't be surprising that something related to it might have valid voicing that leads to the vowels getting completely lost. But, um, yeah, just something to keep in the back of one's mind.
