The summer of smoke has left people feeling anxious and irritable. People felt disconnected from the land so they described a real loss around really valued summer activities like fishing and gardening. There was also a feeling many people said something like, if it's this bad now, what does it mean for our kids? So when I think about that in the context of other work on eco-anxiety and ecological grief, for many people, it was a sentinel event in their understanding of what climate change meant for them and their family.
