The Allied Generalissimo of the First World War
Ferdinand Foch spoke in a similar vein in the lectures which he delivered at the Echol de Gere in 1900. Some of those who hurt him utter these words in the classroom had by 1918 earned distinction under his command in the field. By then Foch himself had become the Allied Generalissimo, the supreme commander of the Allied armies. Nobody was better placed to comment on how the First World War had changed understandings and interpretations of strategy.
