Is There a Penalty for Carrying an Illegal Gun?

Stop question and frisk was a deterrent to carrying an illegal gun on the street. As many young black men ave said over the past couple of years, that has turned around. More guns in circulation means it there's even less friction in getting an illegal gun. And we've seen some shooting cases dropped because t the both sides in the shooting have claimed self defense,. Even though they were each a carrying illegal weapons. It will be interesting to see if how far the self defense claim holds when the person was not supposed to be carrying a weapon. I'm specially worried about moreore, more legal guns undermining enforcement.
