Counting the Seals in Antarctica
Scientists had attempted to count the seals before, but Leo had reason to believe that the last count was too high. The heli counters flew over a couple of areas with seals, took photos, and counted them. Then they multiplied that out over the rest of the continent. In other words, there's not an equal amount of seals across every part of Antarctica.
