The Rise in Mindfulness and Meditation Is in Part a Response to This
Many people who come on my retreats have never had any interest in buddhism or religion. But then, for some reason or another, they have to deal with some anxiety, maybe even loneliness. They find themselves offered an eight week course in mindfulness. And a certain number of those people who embark that training discover that not only does it help them deal better with anxiety, let's say, but it also awakens them to the fact that they can be by themselves. What i think our society is in enormous need of is a training in aloneness. That goes right back to the beginning of one's education.
