The Credit System in Science
The first scientist to make a discovery gets all the credit for that discovery of some other group are almost there they get nothing. It's kind of like the second prize in science is nothing, which seems rather brutal. And it holds the motivational structure in such a way that scientists will be more reluctant to take certain kinds of risks where they could end up just being totally scooped and ending up with nothing but desk full of useless.
