I think there's a quote from Clarence Thomas where he talks about the idea that when he first started out, it was kind of like a dysfunctional family. And you'll note in that quote, he referred to the time with Chief Justice Rancrest, they were a family. My sense is that some of the justices felt that they weren't sure their colleagues were playing straight with them on internal dealings.
