From 104 through 100, the new man held an unprecedented series of five consulships in succession as he beat back the blunt giants. Among the people, Marius was hailed as the saviour of Rome. Offerings and libations were made to him as if he were a god. He worked hard to reward his soldiers for their part in the victories. To Italians who served in his army, he granted Roman citizenship with unusual generosity. Caesar would find his most important political model in his uncle Marius. Both championed the same groups, ordinary Romans, Italians and common soldiers above all.
