Within 50 years, cambulak had been transformed into a vast cosmopolitan oasis of culture and learning. The city is laid out in squares as a chess board - so beautiful it could not be described. As marco wandered through the shops he would have noticed that people were paying for stuff with paper rather than gold or copper. Within the confines of the mongol empire, almost everyone used stamped, printed and standardized paper currency just like we do to day. Each year kublai has so great a quantity of these paper notes made that he could pay for all the treasure in the world, though it costs him nothing.
