What Is a Semiconductor Chip?

A semiconductor chip is a piece of material usually silicon that has lots of little transistors carved into it. The first chips commercially available in the 1960s could remember four ones or four zeros at a time. Today, if you go to an Apple store and buy a new iPhone, you'll get 15 billion of these transistors on just the main chip in an iPhone. And this increase in the number of transistors you can put on a chip drives Moore's law.
