Neurons can look significantly different in their connection arrangements depending on which neo cortex layer they're situated in. The thalamus is the main imper and a sub cortical structure to the neo cortex. It primarily sends sensory or pre processed information into layo four of the neocortex. All functional areas in t near cortex are by directionly connected with other brain structures but their main imputs and outputs come from other cortical areas by long distance connections.
