Cavalry mounts were specially bred for the job and required almost as much training as the soldiers who rode them. One common training tactic was to fire off pistols and muskets into the air around them as they ate, so they would learned to ignore the sound of gunfire. Long serving cavalrymen often formed tight bonds with their horses. They came to see them not only as tools of war, but as companions.
