There's a tremendous amount of occultism surrounding the history of the last maybe like four major wars for Americans. So long as you're not an atheist, you cannot become a Freemason if you don't believe in a God or a higher power. If you create a society like Skull and Bones that falls out of line with Masonic teaching or Masonic etiquette, you will be considered non Masonic. The thing is people fear what they don't understand. And I'm using this as a really simplified analogy to show that Masonry is decentralized throughout the world.
