Tolkien is doing much the same kind of thing with looking at Northern mythologies and languages. He's combining it like willy-nilly with Babylonian things and stuff. And then everything, you know, before or since from just about anywhere in the world. It's astonishing to look back and think that he thought he could pull this off... But part of the course is he changed what he was doing over time too.
