Highland Dress Etiquette

Some people feel that the wearing of another clan's tartans or a family that you don't belong to some people interpret that as cultural appropriation. During the 19th century the wearing of the kilt became sort of codified in a way and I'm curious about what are some of the rules about wearing a kilt in a quote unquote traditional manner. As opposed to rules I would call it the etiquette.
