Are CEOs Really Good at Hiring Their Own Replacements?

A Wall Street Journal piece raised the question of whether CEOs are really even capable of hiring their own replacements. I feel like getting the succession thing right is a key part of your legacy. If you get the succession right, if you manage to set your success up for even more success than you had, that's awesome. In theory, but these are people like big ego.
