The Utopian South and the Present Day South

The movie is trying to say the antebellum south and modern day south that wants to go back to this evil, it's pure health, pure horror. And meanwhile, they're trying to say, but look at this utopia of these amazing liberated, brilliant sexual women in the present day. The directors also mentioned that they purposely put in the lines of dialogue where the Jenna Malone character, the evil white and slavery lady, when she's talking about how great Veronica's lipstick is. It's because a lot of these white women, they envy black women, they want to be just like them. That's the message going on here.
