i don't think there's ever been a end of empire moment in this country. The way British officials dealt with the end of empire was to transition the empire to the commonwealth. It means that at some level, britain remains notionally non national as a polity. And i think it's only recently that we're beginning to have something of a reckoning with what empire and the end of Empire has meant.
