Eucalyptus came to California as envelopes of seeds on boats in the 1850s. The gold rush drew people from all over, including from Australia. It was grown here from seed, which meant it didn't bring along any usual bugs or pathogens back home. Over the next few decades, eucalyptUS trees in California were loved, then hated, then loved again.
