It's a late mediaeval custom that spreads through the early modern period. It grew out of the catholic church because the saint who presides over the day, valentine, an ancient roman called valentinus was made patron saint of birds. By the fifteenth century, in england, the idea has appeared that human beings should send a token of their love to their ed one on valentine's day. But then it almost dies out. Around world war one, it became tired, unfashionable, unpopular and fell into abeyance. And it was only revived because of the exportation of the commercialized american valentine’s card industry
