Ferris argues that the correct answer to philosophical and political problems is usually a complex combination of several apparently antithetical solutions. He blames the scarcity of truly outstanding black authors on the undue emphasis placed on industrial education, as well as the abduction of Africans from their native lands. Alongside his idea of cultural authenticity, Ferris introduces a contrast between being imitative and reflective. In general, he thinks that 999 men in every thousand allow others to do their thinking for them.
