Hubble's Theory of the Universe

Hubble was able to show the things that are further away are moving away from us faster than things that are closer. It's a basic doppler shift kind of effect and things that areMoving away from us the light gets stretched out to make it redder. This outward pressure providing exactly what you need to balance the inward pull of all the mass. And then Hubble literally blew that all up.
