Introduction
We last left the narrative in mid 1806. Napoleon's stunning victory at Austerlitz had brought him to new heights of power. He ruled over most of Western Europe, either directly by annexing new territory or indirectly through puppet governments and alliances with weak powers. The fall of the Great Empire had left a power vacuum which allowed France to assert its influence over huge swaths of former imperial territory in Germany.
