He comes from a small town, and there's actually quite a bit of disagreement among the surviving ancient sources as to whether he was really an affluent local family. But none the less, he is clearly an outsider. And that tension, i suppose, between his rustic, rural origins and really tha, the central role that he came to play in roman politics,. is a very real one, and endures down to the end of his long and well busy life, busy indeed.
