The Car Bomb, What the IED Was in the 70s and 80s
I wouldn't be surprised if later on when Ukrainian troops hopefully liberate the city, you may find worse retaliation again. The car bomb in the 70s and 80s took on this totemic image of the means with which a civilian population couldn't resist and push back and kill. And then that's sort of morphed into the IED, the improvised explosive device, erroneously called roadside bombs because they could be anywhere. It's only a short step through a through a looking glass of ill discipline, poorly trained, no moral center of a military force to then seek reprisals against against a civilian population.
