Is the Self Emerging?

We talk about the self as a piece of language. Do we also think of that as some sort of item of ontology, in some kind of serious philosophical sense? And if we do, why? And I'm not sure, why, in a sense, one asks this question in a way that's distinct from the question of what is a system. So if we think of the electron field, for example, as a system, why not think of it as a self, too?
