The formation of family after tragedy is a huge subject of consciousness, and it is a consciousness given to us by harry cruze. Harry's mother flees to florida, as tobias said, to work in a cigar rolling plant. And sometimes the tobacco was too stiff to roll, and the mother would come home so tired and miserable that she would come home and beat the children. By the end of the book, i was weeping.
