Barfield believed in a descent and reascent. After jesus incarnation, there was a reascent starting. And yes, we do see things like all those words hyphenated self dash,. something coming in after the reformation, et cetera. But he doesn't think that it necessarily means progress. I could see a way of trying to redeem it when you place on christian goggles and look at history. It's kind of ironic really, because out of this great war, lewis was cured of chronological snobbery.
