Love of Spalte in Germany in the 19th Century?
You mention wetereat unification in germany. It seems to come quite late in european history. But couldtht been another appeal of this idea that there wasn't one singler ensity of of greece in ancient times? Probably trichker, one of the most famous nineteenth century german historians, actually made that parallel directly. There may be others as well. And the idea that there was strength, not in unity, but in variety and individuality of states too. I mean, i think there's a sense in which some of the more extreme prussian style love of sparta is very much discredited on the left.
