The Passover Custom of Amnesty
The tradition of releasing a prisoner at the feast is not attested in historical sources. It's well attested that Rome did have customs which gave amnesty, especially during holidays. The release of barobus could be interpreted as a symbolic representation of the release of the scapegoat into the wilderness with Jesus taking on the role to be sacrificed. And so what we have is two individuals, one is set free and the other is to die.
